May 30. Day 41. Curtain Call

There's this debate going on online about whether or not it's okay to film the curtain call of a show. Personally, I think it's fine unless you are instructed not to or the content of the performance is such that it would be obviously disrespectful to whip out your phones

I thought of this tonight at the Kingston Butter Factory during a performance of The Inheritance by Toni Janke. Right at the end two things happened 1) we were taught a song to join in on and 2) we were invited to stand and clap and dance. To me, these are very clear signals that the formal bit of the show is over and getting out the phone is okay.

Most people in the audience seemed to be following by the same rules. Some however seemed to think videoing was more important than watching. To me, that shows disrespect to both the audience and those around you.  And that's even before we talk etiquette or copyright.

There were no ushers about to police the behaviour but just because you can get away with it doesn't mean you should. Okay?
